How to make patent leather less shiny9/18/2023 The patent leather can be produced on both bovine hides and on sheep and goat hides, these are firstly sanded on the grain side to make the substrate homogeneous and then they go on to the impregnation phase. The first important step when it comes to produce a patent leather, is to make the hides fairly rigid and with a "firm" hand in order to avoid problems with grain loosing and wrinkles this is obtained by means of specific recipes of tanning and the use of resins. The thicknesses required in this type of leather are usually not excessive, also because the best results are obtained in the 0.8-1.6mm range, exceeding these limits quality problems may occur. For the rest, the starting skin, otherwise problematic, is well tolerated in the process that leads to the production of a patent leather hide. When producing leather with a varnish-like finish, leather hides used have usually an economic starting price, the important thing is to avoid macroscopic defects, such as: marks, holes and deep wounds.
